Why are many people against space exploration?

I would be all for it if we had a happy world with no poverty, hunger,disease etc. but to commit precious resources to it is grossly irresponsible when there are such problems in the World in my opinion. It is ogous to a parent buying a flashy sports car when his children are not fed or clothed properly. The difference is, a lot of people don't give much of a **** about anyone else as long as they're ok.
